#FiveBoroughBucketList #24: Macy’s Flower Show

Scroll down to content
Springtime in New York City. Flowers are blooming, coats are coming off, and there’s something special happening every day.
For those of you not in the know, Macy’s operates its flagship store on 34th Street, at Herald Square. It was built back in 1901, measures more than 2.2 million square feet, and is the world’s second largest department store.
Each year, Macy’s has its famous holiday windows. I haven’t seen those yet (adding them to my list now…), because I’ve always equated Herald Square with the T word – tourists. I know, very judgmental of me, but don’t say you don’t do the same!
Macy’s also puts on a flower show each year. Maybe it was my bias against visiting Herald Square, but I had never heard of the flower show until this year.
“But Jenn,” you’re thinking. “Where the heck do they put flowers?” I thought the same thing, so I hopped on the subway (with delays!) to find out. I really added this to my list as an excuse to take pictures for my mom, because she loves everything floral.
The Macy’s Flower Show is actually celebrated in five different cities during the same two-week period: New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Minneapolis, and San Francisco.
The first show was held in San Francisco in 1946. It was a really small setup of some potted plants and orchids.
New York show was back in 1953. Now, each show gets its own unique theme. Past themes included things like “Art in Bloom,” “The Secret Garden,” and “America the Beautiful.” This year featured a carnival theme!
The flowers are spread all throughout the ground floor of Macy’s. In keeping with the theme, there are little setups that (this year) included a ticket booth, merry go round, and ferris wheel. It was really cool (and a little odd) to be checking out flowers in between smelling fancy perfumes and looking at designer bags. I think if I worked at Macy’s I’d be distracted by all the flowers and plants.
Every show has about one million flowers. That’s MILLION. That’s a lot of flowers, and they’re kept fresh for the two weeks by keeping the temperature at about 65 degrees. No touching!
I thought the flower show was a cool little thing to check out. It’s free, so it made for a nice and affordable way to spend some time in the city. It was also fun to see how they played off the theme and made different areas stand out.
I’d love to check out some pictures of past shows to see how times have changed. Since NYC is also home to different botanical gardens, I think Macy’s knows that they have to up their game each year to get people to come in.
The Macy’s Flower Show goes until April 9th. If you’re in town, I recommend checking it out! Here are some more shots to get you in a springtime mood:
