#FiveBoroughBucketList #154: Have a Cone from Soft Swerve

Finding tasty ice cream in New York City isn’t really difficult. There are a million trucks, chains, and standalone places to choose from. The problem is that there may be too many choices. How can an ice cream store set itself apart when there are so many places to grab a vanilla cone? Enter Soft Swerve, a standalone ice cream store on the Lower East Side.
New York Magazine describes Soft Swerve’s menu as “Preternaturally smooth Asian-inspired flavors like black sesame, matcha, and Instagram-favorite ube on mix-and-match cones.”
That sounds insanely pretentious, but it’s the truth. Soft Swerve made headlines when its Ube ice cream drew crazy long lines. This place is a great example of just how powerful social media can be for a business. After seeing all kinds of posts with purple ice cream and black cones, I added Soft Swerve to my list.
To be honest, I wasn’t really looking forward to my trip here. I’ve said before how I love ice cream…but not “unique” ice cream. Give me some cookies n cream or coffee and I’m good to go. Ube, black sesame, and matcha? This was definitely not going to be like a trip to Eddie’s Sweet Shop. Soft Swerve lets you sample flavors before you order – I tried the 3, but wasn’t feeling ordering an entire cone of any of them.
Fortunately, the Soft Swerve menu also features something a little different that I thought would be up my alley – almond cookie. I ordered it in one of the store’s famous dark chocolate cones. You have your choice of toppings, so I went with Oreos (duh) and the regular cookie crumble. I went outside for a quick Instagram picture (duh) before diving in.

The verdict? This ice cream was #goals. Almond is the main ingredient in Italian Rainbow Cookies, so this tasted like those cookies blended into ice cream. It was absolutely a flavor I never thought I would order, but I’m really glad I did. My whole Bucket List journey has been about trying to break out of my comfort zone, and trying out new foods is one of the ways to do that.

Questions for you!
Have you been to Soft Swerve?
What’s the craziest ice cream flavor you’ve ever had?
